Atheist Believers?

Scratch your heads as you look at this statistic from the Pew Forum on Religion and Public life:

21% of Atheists believe in a God!

I love this statistic! Luther said in the introduction to the Ten Commandments in the Large Catechism that

"A god means that from which we are to expect all good and to which we are to take refuge in all distress, so that to have a God is nothing else than to trust and believe Him from the [whole] heart; as I have often said that the confidence and faith of the heart alone make both God and an idol."

This statistic seems once again to confirm this biblical teaching. Everyone is born with an innate sense that there is a God and therefore will worship in some way, something.
For more on how to worship and who to worship I refer you to Hebrews 1.

Isn't atheism defined as the disbelief in a god/gods?

Yes. Therefore the statistic shows us two things: It's impossible to truly be an atheist (actually most atheists are agnostics).

2. Statistics are not to be trusted to understand much in life. :)
